Learning from the past about tolerant and democratic coexistence

Greek-German Youth Seminar

21 - 25 July 2014, Berlin

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Greece, the Greek Youth Organisation Youthnet Hellas as well as theaktuelles forum nrw in Germany cordially invite you to attend the German-Greek seminar titled „Why does it concern me!?“ - Learning from the past about tolerant and democratic coexistence to be held in Berlin from 21st to 25 July 2014.

The Nazi past still determines the relation between Germans themselves and between Germans and their partners in Europe. The German occupation in Greece during World War 2 and the brutal massacre by the German armed forces, the Wehrmacht, has left a trail of deep wounds behind it. Following the current crisis in German-Greek relations more attention was drawn to this chapter of world history. At the same time the Greek neo-Nazi party "Golden Dawn" gains an increasing number of supporters for its standpoints. Right-wing extremist attitudes are also wide-spread in Germany and thus can no longer be viewed as a marginal problem.

How do people in Germany and Greece remember the Nazi crimes and their victims? What is the meaning of this period of time for the young of both countries? How does the past influence the image of each other? What are the causes of the rise of right-wing extremism? And how can prejudice and racism be dismantled? These are only a few of the questions to be discussed during the seminar.

The timetable inter alia includes visits of memorial sites and museums in Berlin and the surrounding area, two workshops and discussions with representatives of the civil society. The seminar addresses in total 20 young people from Greece and Germany. Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung takes over the travel expenses, the cost of accommodation and part of the cost of meals. No attendance fee is foreseen.

Further details about the trip and timetable will be provided following your registration.
